The widespread use of asbestos in building materials during the 1930s through the 1980s put many trade workers at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease, like mesothelioma and lung cancer. Trade workers were exposed to asbestos during construction, demolition and remodeling projects, even being in close proximity to others working with asbestos-containing products could put someone at risk. Many trade workers were exposed to asbestos while installing drywall and working with joint compound, or “mud” as it is often referred to as. The required mixing and sanding of the joint compound generated constant dust and debris, which was later inhaled into the lungs of the worker, potentially causing mesothelioma or lung cancer later in life. In fact, the majority of building materials prior to 1980 contained asbestos, regularly used products such as floor tiles, roofing and ceiling products, water and sewer pipes, etc. Therefore, individuals working in the construction trades are at the highest risk of developing mesothelioma or lung cancer because of the high prevalence of asbestos use in these occupations.
If you were exposed to asbestos while on the job, and have developed an asbestos-related illness, you may be entitled to compensation.
There is $30 Billion set aside in trusts for workers who were exposed to asbestos while working on the job or at home and have been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease, such as mesothelioma or lung cancer. Many asbestos companies have filed for bankruptcy and have set up bankruptcy trusts. These are trusts that were specifically designed to compensate veterans and their families if they were exposed to asbestos and develop an asbestos-related illness.
